Young chefs invited to ‘Cook South Africa!’ – to win placement at The Tasting Room, SA

Young chefs can win a week of training alongside acclaimed South African chef Margot Janse by designing a menu inspired by the cookery and ingredients of South Africa.

The Cook South Africa! competition has been launched for the second year and is open to students and those already working in the catering and hospitality industry up to the age of 25 years old.

Entrants are being encouraged to research South Africa and its food– no previous experience of either is needed. They must submit their own three-course menu, inspired by what they can learn about South African food and cooking, and using one of South African plums, peaches or nectarines, apples and pears, in each course.

A paper-based first round will take place early in March 2014, after which eight chefs will be invited to take part in a cook off final in London at the end of the month.

The winning chef will take an expenses-paid trip to Franschhoek in the country’s Western Cape, including travel and accommodation and a week working at the restaurant, located in the Le Quartier Français hotel, alongside a team headed up by award-winning head chef Margot Janse.

There are also runners up prizes for the seven runners up.

The Cook South Africa! competition is part of an ongoing campaign to promote fresh produce from South Africa, particularly the flavour and season of its fruit, and the key role farming is playing in the development on the country.

Last year’s Cook South Africa! 2014 winner Rowen Darlow, a student at Westminster Kingsway College (see picture, attached), travels to South Africa in March 2015 to take up his placement.
