Waitrose is launching its first organic halloumi – becoming the first UK supermarket to do so. With the growing popularity of halloumi showing no sign of abating, the cheese will join the Waitrose Duchy Organic range while the brand is celebrating its 25th year.
Sales of halloumi are up 24% year on year at Waitrose and, like houmous and other Middle Eastern and Mediterranean products, it has made the culinary journey from ethnic speciality to mainstream staple.
Chris Dawson, Cheese Buyer at Waitrose comments, “Halloumi continues to have its moment in the limelight. Fans of this ever-popular cheese can now choose organic with our Waitrose Duchy Organic halloumi. Like our other halloumis, it is made the traditional way in Cyprus but using organic milk from cows, goats and sheep.”
Waitrose offers eight different types of halloumi, with the success of the cheese being put down to its versatility and convenience. It has a high melting point, allowing it to be grilled or even fried and the salty flavour makes it the perfect accompaniment to winter salads and as a protein rich meat alternative.
The Waitrose Duchy Organic Halloumi joins other organic cheeses in the extensive Waitrose Duchy Organic range including organic feta and cottage cheese alongside UK classics such as Stilton, cheddar, Red Leicester and Double Gloucester.
Waitrose Duchy Organic Halloumi, £3.25 is available from Waitrose branches nationwide and online at waitrose.com from the 6th October.
