markTHe chief of Waitrose supermarket will be the new trade minister of UK. The 55 year old supermarket boss, Mark Price will replace Lord Maude as the trade minister in David Cameron ministry. Price who calls himself the ‘Chubby Grocer’ would face the taunting task of uplifting the British export industry where the Government has set up a target of £1trillion for 2020.
Lord Maude stepped down in a surprising move after being in office for less than an year. Maude who has been in politics for over three decade now would be made a life peer, the Government announced. He will take up his new role in April as the head of the new department which would be formed from Business Department and the Foreign Office. Couple of weeks back, Maude, while speaking to newspersons has said that the government might miss the 2020 export target.
Assuming the office in the capacity as the trade minister, Mark Price, will be following the footsteps of some other prominent business leaders like HSBC chairman Lord Green and BT chief Lord Livingston as both have been trade ministers. Lord Price after being with Waitrose for over 22 years, step down as the managing director in October 2015. He was planning to be the Chairman of Channel 4, which didn’t happen.
