The nation clearly has a sweet tooth as the UK is going potty for pudding, with 255 Christmas Puddings being sold every hour at leading discounter Aldi, despite it only being November.
Aldi customers have been flying through the doors and down the aisles to pick up a pudding, with 52,776 being sold between 5th – 21st November 2012.
Due to demand and interest, Aldi has had to bring forward the on sale date of its Orange Topped Christmas Pudding (£7.99) by two weeks, proving that frenzied festive shopping is taking the UK by storm.
Puddings are proving particularly popular in the South East, with Aldi stores selling on average four times more Christmas puddings there than in Scotland – an amazing 416% difference in sales between North and South.
A spokesperson from Aldi said: “The sales data shows that the traditional Christmas Pudding is a clear favourite for the annual festive feast this year. At Aldi we are surprised to see it flying off the shelves so early. It’s testament to the fact that shoppers this yuletide are seeking value as well as quality for their Christmas shop. As we have such a great selection of puddings ranging from our traditional to our connoisseur, we have something to suit every taste and wallet.”
This popularity of Christmas Pudding is an increase compared to 2011, when over the same time period just three puddings per minute were purchased. Aldi has five Christmas Puddings on sale this year ranging from £2.99-£9.99.
Aldi’s Orange Topped Christmas Pudding was recently voted better than Fortnum & Mason in Good Housekeeping taste tests and its mince pies have beaten Harrods and Fortnum & Mason in other taste tests.
Stats are from sales data from the same period of 5th – 21st November year on year based on Aldi’s weekly opening hours.
