Mercadona donates 25,100 tons of basic necessities by 2022

Mercadona has donated 25,100 tons of basic necessities in 2022 to more than 550 soup kitchens and 60 food banks and other charities with which it collaborates in Spain and Portugal. This amount represents a 22% increase in contributions compared to 2021.

Likewise, customers have also collaborated in different solidarity initiatives organized throughout the past year. Their participation in the Great Food Collection organized by the Spanish Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL) stands out, where, thanks to the solidarity of customers and 10% of the total donations that Mercadona added to this solidarity initiative, more than 3.5 million euros were raised, which will be transformed throughout 2023 into more than 2,300 tons of basic necessities for the users of the different participating Food Banks.

Mercadona says this is just another strategic line of the Social Responsibility Plan is sustainability. To this end, it has its own Environmental Management System, based on the principles of the circular economy and focused on logistics optimization, energy efficiency, waste management, sustainable production and plastic reduction.
