Spain: Lidl and Mercadona test the first electric truck

Under this slogan “The future is today” , the German truck manufacturer Man Truck & Bus, of the Volkswagen group, has subjected its first heavy duty 26-ton electric truck to distribution tests in a large city in real traffic conditions.

The chosen city was Madrid – the first outside of Austria where nine units are under test – and among the clients that have been selected for the trial is Lidl, Mercadona (through Acotral, which transports them from their logistics centers to their stores) and the Mazo refrigerator group. The three were very hopeful with the opportunities that are opened with electric trucks of this size to work in urban environments.

The unit they have used, one week each during December and part of January, does not differ in any way from the equivalent model of diesel; it is, in fact, identical to the refrigeration units that Acotral uses to distribute Mercadona’s merchandise from its logistics center to the stores.

This initiative is expected to spread in the country only in 2025, by then there will be a suitable charger for the giant truck that will charge it in a short time, because the actual one takes more than 4 hours.
