Spain increases the minimum wage by 8%

The Spanish Conservative government of Mariano Rajoy increases the minimum wage by 8%. As a minority in the Congress of Deputies, with only 135 of the 350 deputies sitting there, Mr Rajoy gave in. On 1 January 2017, some 5.5 million Spaniards who perceive the SMI will spend 655.20 euros a month (14 monthly payments) to 707.60 euros.

After almost a year of political blockade, during which the executive could only dispatch current affairs, the new Cabinet of the People’s Party (PP, right), formed on November 4, finally resumed a “normal” activity “. But it is far less assured than that led by the previous government team, which had an absolute majority in Parliament. No more the “steamroller,” as the opposition called it. The increase in the minimum wage is the first tangible consequence of these new times. Described as “demagogic” by employers and welcomed by trade unions, which however did not appreciate not having been invited to participate in the agreement with the PSOE.
