The festive season delivered strong sales growth across a number of categories despite divisional sales (excluding fuel) being 0.2 per cent lower compared to the same week last year. The comparisons are distorted by the same week last year being closer to Christmas.
Seasonal meat orders were up by 107 per cent, including turkey orders, which were up nearly 10 per cent. The lower temperatures have certainly inspired customers to turn to more heart-warming dinners recently as we saw sales of our slow cooked meat range increase significantly – up 54 per cent. Accompaniments were up too; vegetable sales increased by 14 per cent and sprouts and organic vegetables were up by 12 per cent.
We also saw record outdoor horticulture sales on Saturday as Christmas tree sales grew by 9 per cent on last year. Festive flowers and bulbs sales were up by 23 per cent and 15 per cent respectively.
Elsewhere, party food orders were up by 7 per cent and sales of delicatessen Christmas hams and pâtés were both up by 4 per cent.
