Scientists Attack Carrefour Over Food Labelling
Supermarket goliath Carrefour have been attacked by scientists over food labelling regarding advice to consumers on diet and how often to eat various products.
Thirty three medical groups, consumer associations and nutritionists presented an open letter in the Journal International de Medecine, criticizing the new once or twice a day and time to time food labelling system as scientifically unable to be defined.
Scientists including leading nutritionist Professor Serge Hercberg of medical research group Inserm, despite describing the idea as laudable, said it would send the wrong message to consumers, giving the impression that it is reasonable to eat cheese pizzas or fattening desserts twice a day.
