The retail chain Rewe wants to reduce the accumulated plastic waste in the near future. “We want to forego as much plastic as possible in the next five years,” said the head of the Rewe Group, Lionel Souque, the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger” (Thursday edition). The company goes beyond the legal requirements.
“Disposable dishes, so plastic plates, cups or forks will be taken out of the assortment from the end of this year,” Souque told the newspaper. As of 2021, an EU directive prohibits plastic disposable tableware such as forks, straws or plates. According to Souque, Rewe is also working to save plastic through thinner films and materials such as grass paper.
