People who bought these mussels must destroy them or bring them back to the store for a refund, the association continues. In case, the so-called PSP toxin, Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning. This causes headaches, nausea and vertigo, disruption of motor skills and speech inconsistency, with a risk of death by paralysis of the respiratory muscles. The first symptoms appear within 5 to 30 minutes after the consumption of contaminated shellfish. The toxin is not destroyed by cooking.
