Total sales for Waitrose excluding fuel were up by 2 per cent on the same week last year. Sales showed a mix of shopping habits as the cold and frosty weather influenced sales of comfort food, while other customers stuck to their healthy New Year’s resolutions.
Fresh fruit sales thrived last week, with vitamin-packed citrus fruit up 13 per cent. Stir fries were a favoured midweek meal, with sales of pre-packed vegetable mixes up 38 per cent. Conversely, indulgent categories such as cheese and beer also saw strong sales. Shoppers treated themselves to something sweet too, as frozen dessert sales rose by 9 per cent and confectionery increased by 13 per cent.
