Asda has extended its agreement with Norbert Dentressangle to encompass the management of its new asset handling and recycling centre in Bristol – the most energy efficient site in Asda’s regional service centre network.
The 110,000 sq ft, purpose-built centre went live in February in support of Asda’s new Bristol distribution centre which opened in September last year. Incorporating a range of energy saving features including combined heat and power, heat recovery and water filtration systems, along with rainwater harvesting and intelligent lighting, it is anticipated that the centre will produce a 20% reduction in CO2 compared to the rest of the network, in line with Asda’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.
In addition, the new site features the latest handling technology, including an automated food waste processing chamber and automated roll cage tipping.
The Bristol service centre replaces a smaller tray wash operation and will provide a complete range of services for the management of returnable transit packaging and the processing and recycling of card, plastic and food waste from Asda stores in the South West.
With all waste from these stores now being handled within a single facility, the new centre will support improved transport efficiency, taking more than 200,000 miles off the road each year, delivering a further CO2 reduction of around 328 tonnes per annum.
All colleagues employed in the former tray wash operation have transferred to the new facility, which has also created a further 40 jobs.
Asda originally appointed Norbert Dentressangle to manage its national network of service centres in 2002. In total, the operation employs 675 people throughout the UK.
The opening of the Bristol facility enhances the network of equipment management and repair, waste management and recycling facilities operated by Norbert Dentressangle for the retail and manufacturing sectors.
