Next week, Iceland will start closing some of its locations across the UK.

Next Thursday, the UK will lose all of the outlets owned by the big supermarket chain Iceland. The retailer of frozen foods has announced that a number of its locations will permanently close.

The announcement of store closures by other merchants precedes the news. Boots, B&Q, TK Maxx, and New Look are all closing their doors.

While Wetherspoons and Byron Burger are liquidating some of their chains, banking giants Lloyds and Halifax are also planning to close banks.

The specific date that each store will close is not known, and it is yet unclear how employees will be laid off. According to reports in the Sun, these are the stores that will close this year, with some closing as soon as next week.

  • White Rose Centre, Rhyl – March 14
  • Birmingham Road Retail Park, Bromsgrove – February 25
  • Chineham Shopping Centre, Basingstoke – February 25
  • South Street, Newport, Isle of Wight – March
  • St Catherine’s Place, Bedminster, Bristol – to be confirmed

Iceland is a significant UK retailer, operating 153 Food Warehouse stores in addition to 500 Iceland supermarkets around the country. Regrettably, large high street firms aren’t the only ones planning to close their doors in the near future. Other retailers are also expected to make site selections.

Brick and mortar stores are suffering as a result of a perfect storm of sky-high energy prices and consumers’ increased shift to online purchasing in the wake of the epidemic. Another reason for lower expenditure is the impact of the cost of living crisis on UK household incomes.
