Following the opening of the first four stores in Portugal, all last July – in Vila Nova de Gaia, Matosinhos, Gondomar and Maia -, the Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona opens this Thursday, September 26, its unit in Barcelos, whose neighbour is competitor Lidl.
The Barcelos store, which has a sales area of 1,900 square meters, created 85 jobs, with Mercadona reaching 1,100 workers in the country.
The company plans to open five more stores this year – in Braga, Over, Sao Joao da Madeira, Gaia and Porto.
The next opening is scheduled for October 29, in Porto, at Domingos Sequeira Street, next to the Boavista roundabout.
As with other stores, before the opening of the supermarket Mercadona “has already started the presentations to the neighbours, with the sessions taking place in the Parish of Carvalhido (Rua D. António Meireles, 140 – Porto)”, which will run until October 11, the company said in a statement.
In 2019, Mercadona expects to invest 100 million euros in its project in Portugal, in addition to the more than 160 million euros invested to date, so the overall investment of the company’s project should exceed 260 million euros. since it announced its entry in Portugal in 2016.
Mercadona’s arrival in Lisbon is only scheduled for 2021.
