Mercadona, the supermarket chain chaired by Juan Roig, yesterday opened its first store in Portugal, specifically in the area of Canidelo, in the town of Vila Nova de Gaia, next to the city of Oporto.
The president of Mercadona, Juan Roig, and the vice president, Hortensia Herrero, along with the rest of the members of the Board of Directors and the Management Committee of the company, attended the inauguration of their first establishment in the Portuguese country. They were accompanied, among others, by the Secretary of State for Agriculture and Food, Luis Medeiros Vieira; the Secretary of State for Consumer Defense, João Torres; and the president of the Chamber of Vila Nova de Gaia, Eduardo Vítor Rodrigues.
Mercadona’s first supermarket in Portugal, to which another nine will be added between now and the end of 2019, is located in the former facilities of the Manoel Marques Gomes Football Field. With a surface area of sales of 1,800 square meters, the establishment responds to the new model of efficient store that the company is implementing progressively in Spain, characterized by reinforcing the excellence in the service and optimizing the act of purchase of its customers. It is a new supermarket concept that reduces energy consumption by up to 40% compared to a conventional establishment.
