Mercadona expands online sales in Barcelona. The supermarket chain begins this service in several districts after having set up an exclusive warehouse for these orders in the polygon of the Zona Franca of Ciudad Condal, the company said in a statement.
Also, the first districts to which this service will arrive are Sarrià-Sant Gervasi and Les Corts. But there will be more soon because the company plans to increase, progressively, in the coming weeks and months the service to other neighbourhoods in the city. It will do so as the project evolves, expanding even to new municipalities in the coming years.
The new online purchase has associated important structural changes that allow processes to be optimized. First, the preparation and delivery of the orders are transferred to the “Colmena”, the warehouse that the company has in the Zona Franca industrial estate. When customers take it there, the purchases go from being managed one by one in stores to doing it in this establishment, which allows the company to multiply productivity by up to eight.
The prospects for this new business in the Catalan capital are good. So much so that from the company say with confidence that “the launch in this great city will be a significant milestone in the firm commitment of the company to address the challenge of online sales in food,” says Juana Roig, director general of the Mercadona online purchase project. A project that in 2020 will be carried out in Madrid and that, in the following years, will continue in other cities.
