Lidl is catch-of-the-day as it is named mid-size
store retailer of the year at MSC Awards 2016
8th June 2016: Lidl UK, Britain’s fastest growing supermarket*, announced today that for the very first time it has been named ‘mid-size store retailer of the year’ at the MSC Awards 2016. The awards, which coincide with World Ocean Day, recognise the retailers and suppliers that are working hard to sustain the world’s oceans, and have been announced alongside the publication of the MSC’s Global Impacts Report, which highlights the environmental improvements made by certified fisheries.
The recognition comes following a huge expansion of Lidl’s products over the last year, which incorporates a new chilled fish selection of MSC labelled products added to its healthy frozen MSC range. New additions include chilled MSC Cold Water Prawns and MSC Hake Fillets, as well as Frozen MSC Lobster and MSC Yellowfin Sole.
Alexandra Scholes, Fish and Seafood Buyer for Lidl UK said: “The award is a great achievement for Lidl, as we put a lot of hard work into ensuring that we meet the criteria of the MSC, while still offering our customers a wide range of quality products to choose from. We also go a long way to ensure that the MSC seal is clear and well communicated to our customers, so it is tremendous to see that recognised in the industry.”
In 2006, Lidl became one of the first UK retailers to offer fish and seafood meeting the criteria laid out by the MSC, whose role it is to improve the conditions of maritime ecosystems. Since then it has continually expanded its range of MSC products and targets its suppliers to ensure that the environmental standards of the MSC are better known, as well as offers a series of incentives for MSC certified products.
