Kroger is closing its store in Fremont’s east side

The closing of the store on South Fifth Street in Nov. 5 to make way for a new 94,000-square-foot store on Cedar Street, about 7,000 people in Fremont will have to drive at least 10 minutes to get to a grocery store.

Fremont Economic Development Director Bob Gross said : “Some have said no, that their other locations aren’t doing well and they don’t want to expand, but one has shown a lot of interest,” Gross said. “We tell them it’s a huge opportunity because they will be the first store on the east side, and I don’t think you would see a second.”.

According to Gross ,the new store was a $20 million investment by Kroger, and the company is not receiving any tax abatements or breaks
