Welsh family bakers Village Bakery has signed a deal with biggest English Supermarket chain Tesco. According to the agreement the Wrexham based Village Bakery will supply griddle cakes for 850 Tesco stores in the region. Alongside these cakes would be exported to the bakeries they have launched in China as well. At present the best-selling griddle cakes from Village Bakery are sold in 300 Tesco supermarkets. The family run business currently makes six-and-a-half million Welsh Cakes an year.

Village Bakery managing director Robin Jones said: “We decided to make the Welsh Cakes with an all butter recipe which is quite unique. “I think that helps the flavour, and also there is extra salt in Welsh butter and I think that complements the Welsh Cake. “We started off on a very small scale making a couple of hundred a day, and it’s just grown and grown over the years, and today we make six and half million a year.

Welsh Cakes are made with extra care and demands more perfection. The company says that it never had to look back once it started making these cakes. Welsh Cakes were always the signature product for the Villiage Bakery. A humble but tasty cake that could be eaten at any time, Welsh Cakes, are now a favourite item in many places around the world including Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai.

“We launched in China three weeks ago and I gather they’re proving very popular there too. Closer to home, the fact that they are now going to be sold in 800 Tesco stores is great news,” Jones included.
