Eroski implants more sustainable packaging in pastries

The cooperative has thus eliminated the old containers by replacing them with containers made of 100% recycled and recyclable PET. In addition, Eroski has replaced the plastic trays of meat and fish packaged in stores with others that contain 80% recycled PET.

“We work to make our products and stores increasingly sustainable. This change favours a circular economy model since the plastic of the water bottles that are recycled is used as a raw material in our pastry trays. These can in turn be recycled again if they are deposited in the yellow container to be used as raw material in other products. The replacement of these packaging trays in a pastry shop will prevent the consumption of 250 tons of virgin plastic per year ”, explains the director of Health and Sustainability of Eroski Alejandro Martinez Berriochoa.

This new initiative joins other improvements that the company continues to develop under environmental criteria in its own-brand product packaging, especially in the packaging and trays used for in-store packaging, prioritizing those for food and fresh produce.

Thus, in the fruit shop section the number of references sold in bulk has increased, already exceeding 60% of the total and has replaced the plastic in the trays of some fruits and vegetables of the own brand Eroski Natur with paper with the FSC stamp , which guarantees that it comes from responsible sources. These actions carried out in the greengrocer section will save more than 46 tons of plastic per year.
