The supermarket cooperative Eroski has announced the incorporation of a new reusable mesh bag as an alternative to the single-use plastic bag for the purchase of fruit and vegetables in bulk.

In a statement in which Eroski announces this incorporation as part of a “commitment to facilitate that the consumer can adopt more sustainable consumption patterns”, the company explains that the new mesh bags are washable, which facilitates their reuse at least until on 20 occasions. At the moment they are available in some supermarkets and will progressively be incorporated into the entire commercial network.

“We work to make our products and stores more and more sustainable. This new initiative joins other improvements that we have developed in the section of greengrocer as the increase of references sold in bulk that already exceed 60% of the total or the replacement of plastic in the trays of some fruits and vegetables of our own brand Eroski Natur by paper with the FSC® seal. We are currently working on a project to completely replace single-use plastic bags with compostable materials of renewable origin that we will begin to implement in the store throughout this year, “explained Eroski Health and Sustainability Director Alejandro Martínez Berriochoa.

Reusable mesh bags are sold in a batch of four units, have a size of 35 cm x 30 cm and carry a weight of 5 kilos. Although it is estimated that it can be reused at least 20 times, the company ensures that only by reusing it more than four times would plastic consumption be reduced compared to the use of single-use bags. If all customers used these meshes instead of plastic ones, they would avoid consuming more than 50 million such bags in Eroski stores. This in turn would mean avoiding the consumption of more than 100 tons of plastic per year.
