Co-op will eliminate “best before” dates on fresh produce

In order to reduce food wastage and help customers save money, the UK supermarket Co-op is eliminating “best-before” dates from fresh fruit and vegetables.

In order to reduce food waste and help consumers save money, Co-op Food has announced that it will stop using “best before” dates on more than 150 lines of fresh fruit and vegetables. All of the Co-fresh op’s produce will no longer have “best before” dates after the end of this month of February, with the exception of a few more perishable items or those for which it may be more difficult to determine the appropriateness of consumption from visual signals.

In a study by WRAP, it was discovered that by removing the “best before” dates from potatoes, apples, cucumbers, and broccoli, about 50,000 tonnes of household garbage might be avoided annually. Moreover, WRAP advises writing storage instructions on packaging without a “best before” label. As a result, Co-op is developing on-pack instructions that highlight the ideal storage settings for extending product life.

The action comes after a small-scale trial last year, and in an effort to reduce milk waste at home, Co-op also applied a “freeze me” sign to its own-brand milk products last year. Moreover, Co-op announced a plan to replace the “use-by” dates on all of its own-brand yoghurts with “best-before” dates in 2022.
