Carrefour opens its first store in Kazakhstan


French supermarket giant Carrefour opens its first supermarket in Kazakhstan. The Hypermarket located in Almaty’s Grand Park Mall offers more than 30,000 items, including fresh produce and groceries, home appliances, sporting goods and leisure equipment, and textile products. The new store employees around 450 workers.

The first Carrefour in the country is around 12,500 sq meters big and located in new Grand Park Almaty.  MAF Hypermarkets Kazakhstan will be in control of the franchise operations for Carrefour once the store starts working. MAF is a subdivision of the Arab Majid Al Futtaim company. Carrefour, founded in 1963 plans to open at least 15 more stores across the country before 2020. Kazakhstan would be a challenge for the supermarket since the population is less the territory is vast.

Eric Legros, CEO, Majid Al Futtaim Retail, said: “The opening of our first outlet in Kazakhstan marks a major milestone for Majid Al Futtaim as we mark another milestone in our regional growth. Kazakhstan is a significant long-term growth market for us, and the new Carrefour Grand Park marks the beginning of a significant KZT 5 billion [Dh52 million] investment programme that will deliver two additional projects in Almaty and Astana.”
