- ” We conduct various activities aimed at preventing food waste. Transferring surplus food to aid organizations, including Food Banks, is a very important part of them. In 2018 alone, Biedronka handed over 4,876 tons of food, which allowed preparing 9.75 million meals. We are now starting a new Good Bag project, thanks to which Food Banks will receive additional support ” says Sylwia Krzyżycka, director of the environmental protection department at Jeronimo Martins Polska S.A.
The program of transferring surplus food currently operates in more than 1,300 Biedronka stores in Poland. On a national scale, food goes to more than 70 organizations: both large ones, such as Caritas Polska and Caritas Diocesan, or the Federation of Polish Food Banks, as well as individual, smaller organizations. The network is also constantly looking for other public benefit organizations interested in receiving surplus food from Biedronka stores.
As part of the program run by Biedronka and its partners, the products are transferred on a donation basis. Among them are those with a close shelf-life date, with damaged packaging, as well as ripe fruits and vegetables. Almost 70% of the goods transferred consist of fresh meat, sausages, delicatessen products and fish, which are used to prepare meals in canteens and canteens, or food parcels in food dispensing points for those in need.
