Amazon wants former M&S womenswear chief to head its fashion brand



Online retailer giant Amazon is expected to launch an own label fashion brand any time soon. The company plans to romp in former Marks & Spencer womens wear chief Frances Russell for a senior position in its new venture.


Previous month Amazon advertised on its online jobs site seeking workers for specialist positions like  “fit specialist”, “inventory manager” and “merchandiser.” Since then rumors were there that the online retailer might start an own label fashion brand soon.

Jeff Yurcisin, Amazon Fashion’s vice president of clothing, said at a conference in October that he saw an opportunity in selling own-label fashion. “When we see gaps, when certain brands have decided for their own reasons not to sell with us, our customer still wants a product like that,” Yurcisin said.

Amazon is one of the top fashion retailers in US, outpacing Walmart and Target ever since it started selling third party branded clothing in 2002. Amazon already sells some own-brand electronic goods, under the AmazonBasics label, and Strathwood furniture in the UK. During last summer, Amazon in its first fashion advertisement played London model and actor Suki Waterhouse as its face to raise the brand profile.  Former Marks & Spencer womens wear chief Frances Russell left the company during last year. Since then she was in talks with Amazon for a top position.
