Aldi wins 43 accolades at the prestigious International Wine Challenge

Discount supermarket Aldi continues to impress industry experts with its drinks range, having scooped a total of 43 accolades at the prestigious International Wine Challenge. Aldi was awarded 28 medals and was commended for 15 products. Aldi’s collection of sweet wines and ports, introduced for the Christmas period, were star performers – collecting seven medals in total, including golds for the Berton Vineyards Botrytis Semillon (£5.99) and Maynard’s Late Bottled Vintage Port 2012 (£8.95).

2016 has seen Aldi introduce its largest ever collection of port, as shopper’s look for something special to celebrate the festive period. Created exclusively for Aldi by Barão de Vilar, a top quality port producer based alongside the River Douro in Portugal, the retailer’s Maynard’s port range boasts four different bottles, including an exclusive 40 year old vintage for just £29.99.

The International Wine Challenge is one of the world’s most respected drinks competitions, pitting the very best wines from around the globe against each other in a series of rigorous blind taste tests.

Tony Baines, Joint Managing Director of Corporate Buying at Aldi, said: “The International Wine Challenge is one of the most highly respected awarding bodies in the industry and receiving 43 accolades is a testament to the work of our talented buyers and dedicated suppliers, who work tirelessly to deliver exceptional products at a great price.

“It’s great to see our sweet and fortified wines performing so well – the products have been exceptionally popular over the years with our customers during the festive period, and we are pleased to be offering our biggest port range to date this year.”

Aldi has had another impressive year with this latest set of results taking it’s medal count to 225 for its beers, wines and spirits range. This is the second gold medal this year for its Berton Vineyards Botrytis Semillon which triumphed at the International Wine and Spirits Challenge (IWSC) in October. The retailer was also awarded ‘Innovator of the Year’ at the IWSC awards earlier this month, as well as ‘Drink Retailer of the Year’ at the Quality Drinks Awards.
