Aldi strengthens in Austria and plans Italian expansion


Aldi strengthens its position in Austria and prepares the ground in Italy. The discounter supermarket  operating under the name Hofer in Austria and Slovenia plans to expand its Austrian operations and set foot in Italy.

The Austrian subsidiary Hofer Kg – plans Italian operation through its subsidiary Merano Aldi Srl expects to strengthen in Vienna through the acquisition of a dozen of Zielpunkt chain branches, which has filed for bankruptcy last December. The company plans to open 50 new stores in Austria this year.

The expansion is not limited to the most important cities in Austria. An operation which – according to a note of ICE Viennese news site Wirtschaftsblatt – calls into question the strong position of Billa (Rewe Group) in the capital.

Previous year was a huge success for the discounter supermarket. Turnover for Hofer for 2015 reached 4 billion Euro. And the development is likely to continue in the current year. A wide range of regional and organic products are expected to be introduced in the supermarket. coolbox for convenience and ready to eat products and a new private label line of foods for vegans, vegetarians and semi-vegetarians is expected to be introduced.
