German discounter chain Aldi has found its new supermarket location in former American TV & Appliance site in Salinas, CA. Situated next to the Northridge Mall, the former American TV & Appliance building sits on 7 acres of land and spreads over 119,000-square-foot. Aldi has purchased a part of this property from the village of Brown Deer for $650,000.
The new supermarket store is expected to start working by the end of this year. American TV & Appliance shuttered in 2014, leaving its store site, 6700 W. Brown Deer Road, devoid of permanent tenant for more than one year as city officials and developers contemplated the property’s future. Aldi’s Oak Creek division vice president, Atty McGrath said that the company expects to be operational in the area by the second half of 2016.
Aldi has been quickly expanding in the U.S. over the rrecent years, thanks to their low prices, abundance of house brands and unique cost-saving measures. McGrath said “we’ve accelerated the pace of new store openings to an average of 130 per year, up from an average of 80 stores per year in recent years.” In Wisconsin, Aldi also plans to open a Neenah store in the second half of 2016 and is currently looking into the possibility of remodeling and expanding the store in Sheboygan, McGrath said. Earlier this month, McGrath told the Milwaukee Business Journal that Aldi plans to open a total of three to five new stores in Wisconsin in 2016.
