Only a few months ago, ALDI Nord and ALDI SÜD, together with the social enterprise Plastic Bank, opened a collection centre for plastic waste in the Philippines. The partners see initial successes: more than 40 tonnes of plastic have already been delivered there. This can fill more than 14,000 yellow bags.
“We are very pleased that the collection point is so well received by the local population. Our partnership with ALDI removes thousands of pounds of plastic from roads, rivers and beaches along Manila Bay, “said Dyan Aimee Rodriguez, Development Manager at Plastic Bank. Together with the social enterprise, ALDI has set itself the goal of reducing poverty while at the same time preventing plastic waste from entering water bodies. In the Philippines, there is no adequate disposal infrastructure. Therefore, the local population can exchange collected plastic in collection centres for cash or in kind. “By partnering with Plastic Bank, we are giving plastics value while supporting the local population,” said Rayk Mende, General Manager Corporate Responsibility & Quality Assurance at ALDI North. “We’ve planned a lot together with Plastic Bank and expect the collection point to produce up to 200 tons of Social Plastic® over the next two years,” added Kristina Bell, Group Buying Director Quality Assurance & Corporate Responsibility at ALDI SOUTH.
Henkel has also been a cooperation partner of Plastic Bank since 2017 and has set up three collection points in Haiti together with the social enterprise. From the 25th of July, ALDI SÜD will offer cleaning agents from the Pro Nature series in action. The articles will be available at the ALDI Nord stores during the “Fair Week” in September. These include, among others, the brands Biff, Pril and Sidolin. The bottles of these products are made from 100 percent recycled plastic – 25 percent of which is Social Plastic®, which comes from Plastic Bank’s collection points.
