Aldi and Edeka are planning residential construction in Munich

Already at a meeting in early 2018, the Munich retailers were enthusiastic about the idea of OB Dieter Reiter to create housing by overbuilding already existing markets. Lidl made the start and submitted several apartment building plans in January 2019: In Sendling and Obermenzing, more than 30 apartments are to be built via one branch.

Now the competition wants to refill. As a spokesman for Aldi Süd confirmed , the plans are already running. They are, however, at an early stage, so nothing can be known about possible locations. The spokesman emphasized that Aldi Süd “had a great interest in realizing further multi-storey real estate projects with residential development in Munich”.

In 2008, the discounter last operated as the client in Munich: at Schwanseestraße 61 in Giesing. The apartments above the store were sold, according to a spokesman for completion.

Edeka also wants to be involved in the future on the Munich housing market. A spokeswoman for Edeka said that Edeka is already represented in many locations in mixed-use real estate and more will follow. Combining supermarkets with residential projects is an important issue in expansion work, especially in urban locations, according to the spokeswoman
