The Edeka market in Elberfelder Straße to close for good

The Edeka market in Elberfelder Straße 7 – 9 closes at the end of the month. The last sale day will be the 29th of May (the Wednesday before the Ascension). The reason given by operator Detlev Henschen is the poor location in the basement of the building. Hema is on the ground floor. “The business in the basement is simply dead.

The five employees were staying at other markets or would retire, says the 61-year-old businessman, who has been running another Edeka fresh market in Zollstraße in Altenhagen for five years.

How the 900 square meter area in the basement of the Hema building will be used in the future, is not yet clear, “but the premises should no longer be used as a retail space,” says Henschen. He looks around for new space for a supermarket. “But that has time. The new market would then probably guide my son, “says Detlev Henschen.
