Italy : Carrefour aims to cut food waste by half by 2025.

Carrefour Italia has said that it wants to cut food waste by 50% by 2025 as part of a broader sustainability strategy that includes consumers, local communities, and charity.

The first step toward waste reduction will take place in-store, with measures such as the valorization of items nearing their expiry date, which will be offered at a discounted price in special ‘anti-waste’ packets.

Furthermore, fresh products will be sold at a discount in the ‘Box Ortofrutta,’ which contains fruit and vegetable items salvaged from broken packaging.

Carrefour Italia is also attempting to create knowledge of conscious and responsible shopping in order to reduce the environmental effect of food waste in consumers’ homes.

With this in mind, the Italian retailer’s connection with Too Good To Go will be maintained, according to the company. As part of the deal between Carrefour and Too Good To Go, more than 278,000’magic boxes’ were sold in 2022 alone, saving around 679 tonnes of CO2.

Furthermore, the newest campaign supported by the two businesses, ‘Save The Panettone,’ saw the sale of over 1,700 Christmas-themed’magic boxes,’ more than double the previous year’s record.

Carrefour Italia’s Zero Waste program will be expanded in February with the launch of many new projects.
