REWE GROUP EXPANDS IN TRAVEL AND TOURISM

Strategic decision on partnership with Exim Tours in the Czech Republic

The REWE Group is investing in the expansion of its Travel and Tourism Division by acquiring 51 per cent of Prague-based Exim Holding a.s. retroactively to 1 January 2012. Exim is the number-one travel organiser in the Czech Republic, number two in Slovakia and also has a major share of the Polish and Hungarian markets. The Exim Group is internationally active under its Exim Tours and Kartago Tours brands, and posted turnover of 225 million euros in 2011.

Norbert Fiebig, Travel and Tourism CEO of the REWE Group: “The acquisition of 51 per cent of Exim’s shares marks an important strategic decision for the entire REWE Group. It decisively strengthens the position of our Travel and Tourism Division in the source markets of Eastern Europe where the opportunities for profitable growth are particularly large.”

The REWE Group is already market leader in food retailing in the Czech Republic with its BILLA brand in the supermarket segment and PENNY brand in the discount segment.

“The number-one retailer has done well to join with the number one in travel and tourism. It is a step rich in prospects in the Czech market,” says Fiebig. “We will concentrate on putting our many customer contacts in the retail trade to work for our travel offers. This strategy has already proved very successful in Germany through the offers of REWE Reisen and PENNY Reisen.”

At the press briefing on REWE Group’s financial results on 22 May, CEO of the REWE Group Alain Caparros said that the Cologne-based trade and tourism group was excellently positioned for further profitable growth in its two core businesses. “With liabilities of just 660 million euros at the end of 2011 and equity share capital of 4.7 billion euros, we are excellently equipped for the opportunities now open to us in Germany and Europe. Our aim and intention is to home in on the opportunities for growth through acquisitions that match our strategy and portfolio.”

The cooperative REWE Group is one of the leading trade and tourism groups in Germany and Europe. In 2011, the company generated a total external turnover in excess of 48 billion euros. The REWE Group, founded in 1927, operates around 15,700 stores with 323,000 employees in 13 European countries. In 2011, around 222,000 employees generated turnover totalling 35 billion euros in over 11,000 stores in Germany.

The sales lines include REWE, REWE CENTER, REWE CITY, toom and BILLA supermarkets and consumer stores, the discounter PENNY, the toom DIY stores and B1 Discount DIY stores as well as ProMarkt consumer electronic stores. Travel and Tourism includes the tour operators ITS, Jahn Reisen and Tjaereborg plus Dertour, Meier’s Weltreisen and ADAC Reisen and the business travel division FCm Travel Solutions and about 2,100 travel agencies (e.g. Atlas Reisen, DER Reisebüro, DERPART).
