THE HALF MARATHON OF “CITIES OF WINE” STARTS FROM CIVIDALE DEL FRIUL
The over 500 athletes of the “4a Marathon and half marathon of the Cities of Wine” enjoied a unique view, running through vineyards and hills and crossing the city of Cividale del Friuli, in the North East of Italy, UNESCO world heritage since 2011.The fourth edition of the competition has been structured in the classical 42,195 km of the marathon and 21,097 of the half marathon, starting form San Giovanni al Natisone and crossing the eight friulian towns members of the national association “Cities of Wine”: Manzano, Buttrio, Premariacco, Cividale del Friuli, Prepotto, Dolegna del Collio, Corno di Rosazzo and San Giovanni al Natisone again. The start of the half marathon was on the Ponte del Diavolo (Devil’s Bridge) Cividale del Friuli: where the atlethes waited for the passage of the first marathon runner, for starting their competition.
The main aim of this sport event is the promotion of both sport and land. A unique chance for the city of Cividale del Friuli for showing its eclecticism and resources. History, culture, folklore, nature and enogastronomy are the tresures to discover, thanks to the several annual city events.
Among these excellences, the wine has always had a fundamental role. Cividale del Friuli setted in a region naturally suited to viticulture, in the center of the DOC region Colli Orientali del Friuli, an area that includes a total of over 2000 hectares of vineyards, where red and white wines of high quality are produce: Verduzzo Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Schioppettino, Picolit and Merlot, Cabernet and Sauvignon. After a visit to the Longobard Temple (Tempietto Longobardo), to the Monastery of Santa Maria in Valle and to the other historical-cultural resources of the city, visitors cannot lose the chance of tasting the unforgattable wines of more than 30 wineries.
