Asda Plans £20m Store Investment

By Laura Elliott.

Walmart-owned retailer Asda has announced the possibility of a new store in Barrhead. The new development will offer jobs hope to many, bringing with it a £20 million investment and around 200 full and part-time job posts in the supermarket, along with 200 construction jobs before it is opened.

The supermarket giant has already lodged a planning application for the development. News of the new store has also followed on swiftly from the announcement of a £3.8 million extension to Barrhead Sports Centre, planned for completion in 2013.

Asda said that if their planning application for the new store is approved, the retail chain will set up a recruitment centre in Barrhead to specifically target local residents seeking work.
