Woman Finds Venomous Spider in Asda Salad
By Laura Elliott.
A woman from the Leicester area has been left shocked after finding a venomous spider hiding in her pre-packed Asda salad. Dr. Tanu Kapur discovered the arachnid creeping through the Asda Wild Rocket salad, minutes before she planned to open it for her family’s dinner that night.
Dr. Kapur has consulted experts who are said to believe that the spider she discovered was in fact a false widow spider – the UK’s most venomous breed. Despite the obvious dangers, when Dr. Kapur phoned the Oadby branch of Walmart-owned retailer Asda, where she had earlier bought the salad, she was not impressed by the response she received.
Dr. Kapur said that “Just before opening it I noted a movement in the bag and stopped. There was a live spider inside the sealed bag of a variety I have not seen as household spider – it had a globular white body with black spots and short legs. I immediately called the local branch.”
However, the store manager was not available to speak to her, and the member of staff who did answer her call did not offer an apology. Reportedly, the employee advised her to “bring in the bag and we’ll refund the £1, or call our head office”.
Spider experts at Twycross Zoo have since identified the spider. A research and conservation executive said that they believed it was a false widow, adding that “they can give quite a nasty bite, but reactions vary from person to person”.
A spokeswoman for Asda has now said that once they have the spider, an investigation will be carried out to discover how the creature became trapped inside the bag. She said that “All our salad is washed, but very occasionally a spider hangs around. We sincerely apologise for any distress caused … and are happy to offer a refund on the salad”.
