Singles Day in China on 11th November is the world’s biggest shopping day – and orders of Waitrose food and drink to the country were more than four times their usual rate in preparation for the weekend. We started exporting to China in 2016 and now provide a range of more than 100 products with sales already 75 per cent up year on year.
Sales excluding fuel were up 0.3 per cent last week on the same time last year. With the launch of our Christmas ad on Sunday the countdown to Christmas has truly begun. In the run-up to the ad’s debut, shoppers took the opportunity of a half-price promotion to stock up on Christmas crackers, with sales up 28 per cent. Stocking fillers such as DVDs and luxury toiletries were up 100 per cent and 45 per cent respectively.
Waitrose has 352 shops in England, Scotland, Wales and the Channel Islands, including 65 convenience branches, and another 27 shops at Welcome Break locations. It combines the convenience of a supermarket with the expertise and service of a specialist shop – dedicated to offering quality food that has been responsibly sourced, combined with high standards of customer service.
