A Brussels court has asked the German Supermarket chain Aldi to change the packaging of its beer brand Buval. The verdict from the Brussels Commercial Court came after receiving a complaint from the beer manufacturing giant AB InBev. The beer manufacturer accused Aldi for mimicking its packaging. The Buval beer package looks almost exactly the same as the InBev’s beer brand Jupiter.

The commercial court judge ruled that the similarities in the package could lead to possible confusion for consumers, which could detract from the brand Jupiler. Aldi has been asked to change the packaging within ten days or else the discounter will have to pay a fine of 250 Euros per violation, which could rise up to one million Euros. The verdict was pronounced on January 13th. A brewery spokesperson said they were pleased by the court decision which recognized their efforts to build promote and protect the Jupiler brand.

This is not the first time that the supermarket giant is facing copycat issues. The discounter is notorious for imitating packages of Global brands for its products.
