The packaging debate continues in search of a resolution to the problem of excessive packaging and the effect it has on our environment The Flexico Group, a leading manufacturer in the resealable, flexible packaging market, recognises the need to maintain the freshness of certain products, but they are constantly seeking innovative alternatives to reduce the need for multiple packaging. Karine Schaefer, Manager of Flexico UK, says,” Unwrapping a food article and becoming confused as to whether we are preparing a meal or playing pass the parcel, as we remove it from the box, open the bag and find the product wrapped in more plastic packaging, should not be happening. Yes, we want our food to be fresh, and our toilet rolls to be kept dry, but when we actually consider how much unnecessary packaging is used in retail, we can understand why it needs to be reviewed. Buying in bulk is one solution but not everyone can afford the financial outlay, and the ethos of no packaging at all is not practical for all items.”

According to a report published by Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP): “Approximately 60% of household food waste arises from products ‘not used in time’, with a value of around £6.7 billion. The majority of this is made up of perishable / short shelf life products, and includes 17 billion ‘5-a-day’ portions of fresh produce (more than a fifth of purchases) bought but not eaten each year.” Karine Schaefer says,” We recognise the impact on the environment of wasting food and our products seek to redress the balance between responsible packaging and keeping food fresh for longer periods. We have a large range of technologically advanced bags and closing systems to meet the corporate and ecological needs of our customers.”

“Many of us are shopping in bulk, as rarely as possible and expect our purchases to remain fresh and usable for longer periods. But perhaps consumers, manufacturers and retailers need to consider what can be done to remove unnecessary packaging from the equation.
