Aldi has announced it will be significantly expanding its store portfolio in London in 2015, with plans to open nine new stores in and around the capital this year. With nearly half of the UK now shopping at the supermarket (Source: Kantar Worldpanel 52 weeks ending 01 Feb 2015), Aldi’s expansion is set to make its high quality and unbeatable prices more accessible to London shoppers.
A further sign of the company’s rapid and continued growth in the UK, the announcement coincided with news that Aldi has overtaken its nearest competitor. Latest figures from retail analysts Kantar Worldpanel, released today (Wednesday 8th April), show that Aldi has reached 5.3% in market share, catapulting it into position as the UK’s sixth biggest supermarket for the first time.
Aldi is reaching new customers, and has seen a huge increase in demand for its premium tier, Specially Selected, with sales of the range increasing by 63.8% in the last 12 months. In January this year the retailer expanded its Specially Selected range to include Specially Selected Ultimate Sirloin Steak, Specially Selected Scottish Lightly Smoked Salmon Fillets, Specially Selected Gorgonzola and Specially Selected Chorizo.
Aldi has announced plans to open new stores in Ewell, Enfield, South Norwood, Tooting, Dartford, Ilford, Romford and Coulsdon during 2015. This follows the successful opening of the New Malden store in March 2015.
These stores represent a new retail proposition for shoppers in the Greater London area, giving Londoners the opportunity to experience Aldi’s high quality products at everyday low prices. The announcement is part of Aldi’s plans to reach new customers across the UK, with the supermarket set to reach the milestone of 1,000 stores by 2022. Aldi currently employs 24,000 staff and operates over 560 stores in the UK.
Aldi’s planned store openings will also bring new jobs to the capital, and Aldi has initiated a major recruitment drive across Greater London, with the supermarket currently recruiting over 500 store positions. Aldi will require around 500 general store staff, 40 Assistant Store Managers and 10 Store Managers to support the running of its new and existing stores.
Giles Hurley, Joint Managing Director of Buying, commented: “Our unique ability to offer UK shoppers outstanding quality products at everyday low prices is key to driving our growth as reflected in recent Kantar Worldpanel figures showing our 5.3% market share and our position for the first time as the UK’s sixth biggest supermarket. As we celebrate our 25th Anniversary in the UK, I’m excited that Londoners will soon find it easier than ever to benefit from Aldi’s high quality produce at everyday low prices.”
Tony Baines, Joint Managing Director of Buying, commented: “Aldi is committed to investing in the UK and Greater London is a key area of growth for the business. With this will come a significant number of job opportunities for the Greater London area for both our existing and forthcoming stores.”
