Tesco criticised by union on workers' rights

Tuesday, 30 June 2009 13:36 News

Tesco has been criticised by a trade union group on its standard of workers' rights in some foreign markets, including America, Thailand and Korea. These public allegations come just days before the chain meets with a domestic union at an AGM meeting.

The criticism follows complaints from locals to these countries. Tesco employs 470,000 staff in fourteen countries, and has described the accusations against their employment policy as a "travesty". The chain feels the criticisms have been politically motivated to attract more members to the union.

The UNI, however, contend that Tesco's employment practices are not in accordance with the chain's claimed global statements on workers' rights. The complaints have arisen from 120 Fresh 'N' Easy stores in America; 476 Tesco Lotus stores in Thailand, and 246 branches of Tesco in Korea, where the chain has enjoyed real success this year.
