Storms in the Andalucian region of Spain have ravaged fruit crops, causing millions of euro's worth of damage.
According to newspaper El Dia de Cordoba, Jose Ruiz, the Mayor of Palma del Rio, has estimated that the exceptionally stormy weather over the last three months has affected over 1,000 hectares of crops, with the cost of damage to infrastructure topping EU 3.5 million.
Earlier in March, the Junta de Andalucia estimated that the strawberry crop in the Huelva region has suffered 77 million euro's worth of irreparable damage. In Cordoba, the farmers union ASAJA put the cost of damage in the area at EU 250 million.Spain is suffering from an economic downturn more severe than most countries in the EU, with drastic falls in tourism revenue and domestic construction, the country's two main industries. The loss of export income that will ensue from the crop damage will be likely to compound an already fragile economy.
