Scheme launched to make 26 million homes more efficient

A pioneering £3 million project is now underway to design a supply chain solution to improve the energy efficiency of the vast majority of the 26 million UK homes (1) which will still be in use by 2050.

The Energy Technologies Institute (ETI), a public private partnership tasked with developing ‘mass-scale’ technologies that will help the UK meet its 2050 carbon reduction targets, is beginning a two-year project to identify ways in which the refurbishment and retrofitting of existing residential properties can be accelerated by industrialising the processes of design, supply and implementation, while stimulating demand from householders by exploiting additional opportunities that come with extensive building refurbishment.

Women embrace DIY

Experts at The National Home Improvement Show  believe that more and more women are powering up and taking on a more equal share of home improvements following a recent survey which revealed that nine out of 10 women now own power tools and 67 per cent are actively completing their own DIY task around the house.

Home Depot raises earnings forecast on back of sustained sales growth

The worlds's largest home improvement retailer The Home Depot has raised its earnings guidance in the light of the third consecutive quarter of sales growth. The company reported revenues of $41.2 billion for the second quarter, an increase of $100 million from the same period last year.

Sales for the second quarter totaled $19.4 billion, a 1.8 percent increase from the second quarter of fiscal 2009. Comparable store sales for the second quarter of fiscal 2010 were positive 1.7 percent, and comp sales for U.S. stores were positive 1.0 percent.

Asda pledges support for the thrifty in light of hard times to come

Leading economists Cebr have forecast that UK families could face the lowest amount of disposable income for more than two years in the final quarter of 2010.

The second half of the year is expected to be an upward struggle for the average household as income growth struggles to match inflation. In a one-off, forward looking Income Tracker report, Cebr predict a modest uptick in December, but disposable income in the final month of the year is predicted to be £172 – £5 lower than December 2009 and the same level as December 2008 when the UK economy entered recession.

Asda cuts price of fuel

On the day that Walmart releases its second quarter sales (for fiscal 2011), Asda announced it was cutting the price of both unleaded and diesel by up to 1ppl and 2ppl respectively.

The latest move means from today drivers filling up at Asda will not pay more than 111.9p for unleaded and 114.9p for diesel at any of its 180 filling stations.
